Why Is My Air Conditioner Blowing Hot Air?

One of the most common questions that an HVAC professional can get is “Why is my air conditioning unit blowing hot air?” In reality, there are myriad reasons why this could be happening, but we’ve got five common causes to share that may save you a goodly amount of time and money.

1) Dirty Air Filter: The air filter protects the inner components of your A/C unit from dirt and debris, and enables proper airflow. You should always follow the manufacturer’s recommended filter changing schedule.

2) Blocked/Dirty Condenser Unit: Weather can blow leaves, dirt, and other debris into your outdoor unit causing a blockage.

3) Erroneous Thermostat Setting: Your fan should be set to “auto” and system set to “cool.” The temperature setting should be at least five degrees lower than what the room temperature reads.

4) Leaky Air Ducts: A leak in your air ducts can interfere with your system’s function.

5) Low or Leaky Freon: Low freon will, of course, mean low cooling capabilities. Since freon isn’t used up, low freon means you have a leak, and this will need to be addressed by your HVAC professional.
